Conditions for Release of Payment
Before Starting School
Here are some things you should know and do before starting school.
- Plan for your post-secondary studies ahead of time. Funding the cost of your post-secondary studies is the shared responsibility of you, your family and government. Access information, including research strategies, on how to pay for your post-secondary studies.
- Research the educational institution and program for which you are applying. Speak with an advisor at the educational institution to save you time and money – remember, you are investing in your future!
- If you are 22 years or older, and this is the first time you are applying for funding for post-secondary studies, you must pass a credit check. Your funding is conditional on having a satisfactory credit history.
- Learn how a student loan works by completing the Entrance Counselling session on the EDULINX website.
Release of Payment When in School
- If you have applied online for student funding, you may be mailed a Declaration and Consent form. You must read, sign and return the completed form immediately. Further funding will be withheld until Students Finance receives your signed declaration.
- If you are a dependent student, your parent’s signature is required on this form.
- If you are married or common law, your spouse’s/partner’s signature is required on this form.
 |
NOTE: If we have not mailed you a Declaration and Consent form, these conditions do not apply to you. |
Before any funding will be released:
- Your educational institution must confirm that you are registered as a full-time student in the program you selected, and for the period of study for which you applied for funding.
- Your personal and program information on your funding application must match the information you used to register at the educational institution.
- You must report any changes to this information to Students Finance and your educational institution. Inconsistent information will cause delays in the confirmation process which will delay your funding.
Other Important Information
- Your educational institution may request that a tuition amount be automatically remitted from your student loan.
- You must attend school regularly, remain registered in a minimum 60% of a full course load and maintain academic progress.
Exception: students with a permanent disability must be registered in a minimum 40% of a full course load.
- You must notify your educational institution, service provider(s) and Students Finance if you withdraw from studies or drop to part-time studies, as this will affect your funding amount(s).
- You must report any changes in personal and financial information to Students Finance and your service provider(s).
- Alberta Student Loans received prior to August 1, 2001 were processed and are still administered by a lending institution. Contact the lending institution that processed your loan for you.
- Alberta Student Loans received after July 31, 2001 are administered by EDULINX on behalf of the government. You can access EDULINX Online Services to review your Alberta Student Loan information, check your balance, obtain details about new Alberta Student Loans you have received and update your personal and other contact information.
When Not in School
- Once you complete your studies or decide not to continue, your service providers will contact you with repayment information and details.
- You will repay interest and principal on your federal and provincial student loans in accordance with Canada and Alberta Student Loan Agreements.
- You need to keep lender(s) and/or service providers informed of changes in your personal information.
- You may seek assistance from lender(s) and/or service providers if you experience difficulties repaying your loans.
