Why Study in Alberta? Safe and Welcoming

Alberta, Canada is a peaceful, politically stable and safe province, with a multicultural and diverse population. It is a vibrant and growing province, abundant in resources and made up of diverse landscapes and cultures. People from around the world are drawn to our quality education system, high standard of living and safe communities. Our welcoming and friendly citizens thrive in a free and open democratic society where cities are clean and the cost of living is low.

A key reason for Canada's appeal as a study destination is its safety and security. According to a recent survey of international students in Canada, fifty-two per cent of students surveyed said that a "safe country to study in" was their first or second most important reason for choosing Canada.

Quality of Life

According to many international quality of life surveys, including those done by the United Nations, Canada consistently ranks amongst the best places in the world to live, work, and study.

  • In 2002, Calgary was ranked the cleanest city in the world, thanks to its environmental practices, clean air, and efficient refuse system.

  • In 2004, the United Nations ranked Canada near the top of the Human Development Index, due to Canada's national income, achievements in educational attainment, and life expectancy.

Canada is well known for its:

  • Comfortable population density
  • Low incidence of violent crime
  • Abundance of fresh water
  • Model health care system

Alberta continues to gain international attention for work being done to improve the quality of life for its citizens. Alberta's Advantage is:

  • Low cost of living/Reasonable housing-The average house price in Calgary or Edmonton is approximately 35 to 45 per cent less than a home in Toronto or Vancouver.

  • Provincial government investment into state-of-the-art facilities and programs continues to put Alberta at the forefront of healthcare delivery and attract world-class medical practitioners.

  • Albertans are among the best-educated people in North America. During 2004, 58 per cent of the labour force, 25 years of age and older, reported holding a post-secondary education certificate, diploma, or university degree.

  • In the early 1990s, Alberta's overall crime rate decreased substantially and remained relatively stable. In 2003, the crime rate in Alberta was lower than the rates in other western provinces for the eleventh consecutive year.

Multicultural and Egalitarian

The Canadian Multiculturalism Act promotes equality in the economic, social, cultural, and political life of the country. There are over three million people living in Alberta from diverse cultures and backgrounds and although English is the official language, some of the other languages spoken in Alberta homes include Chinese, German, French, Punjabi, Vietnamese, Polish, Spanish, Arabic, Italian, and Ukrainian.

This diversity provides Alberta with outstanding cultural arts, and Albertans are dedicated to preserving the provinceÆs cultural mosaic. Alberta has an excellent network of museums and interpretive centres, displaying our natural, human, and cultural history. Since we in Alberta all come from such different backgrounds, we make our visitors feel at home, regardless of their origins.

Welcoming Institutions

International students arriving in Alberta to attend one of our institutions can expect to be warmly welcomed and taken care of. Students can make use of academic and career advising services. Many institutions have a special department for assisting international students.

Most institutions also have great facilities for extra-curricular activities and sports.These activities are just the way to get to know your new schoolmates, your new institution and your new surroundings.

Students of all interests and levels can find an educational program in Alberta that will match both their expectations and qualifications. Flexible curricula allow students to gain broader experiences and finish programs, providing students with new qualifications and new employment opportunities.
