Steps to Study in Alberta - Step 4: Before You Leave

Before making final preparations for your trip, ensure that your study permit has been granted.

There are also several other things to consider before you embark on your journey to Alberta, Canada.

Before Leaving
Contact Your Institution

Ensure that you have confirmed with your institution that you will be arriving for the academic year. Institutions can be very helpful in providing information about the campus, city or town, climate, local customs, public transportation, banking, etc. Your institution is also a good resource for finding somewhere to live. They can advise you on locations, renting, apartment listings and more.

Arrange Your Finances

Ensure that you are able to access your finances from your home country, and bring travellers' cheques with you. Full-time international students registered in a degree or a diploma program in Alberta can work part-time on campus without the need for a work permit. However, this is usually for extra money and would not be enough to live on.

Book Your Airline Ticket

Contact your institution and find out which route and airport to use. Be sure to book a return ticket, because you may have to provide it when you go through Canadian customs. Many Alberta institutions can arrange for someone to meet you at the airport.

Insurance

Make sure to obtain and maintain appropriate health, travel and personal insurance. If you will be studying in Alberta for at least 12 months, the Government of Alberta provides subsidized health care coverage. If you will be in Alberta for less than 12 months, you must ensure that you have appropriate health care insurance. Please contact your institution for more information.
