Local Transportation
Public Transit
Most cities in Alberta have urban transportation systems (buses and/or trains).
You can usually pay with cash, but some may require tickets, which can be purchased at most convenience stores. If you are paying in cash, remember that drivers do not carry any change so try to pay the exact fare in order to avoid over-paying for your trip. |

Monthly transit passes and books of tickets can be a good way to save money on local transportation. Your local public transit authority can provide you with information on which solutions are most economical for your needs as well as provide maps of routes and schedules. Some areas even have public transit telephone information line.
Ask your institution or anyone in the area about information regarding contacting the public transit. Most often, transit authority addresses and telephone numbers are found in the front of the white pages telephone book (in the municipal blue pages section).
When using public transportation, Albertans line up. First come, first served, is a common approach to many activities in Alberta.
Private Vehicles
Cars can be expensive to buy or maintain, and car insurance is mandatory in Alberta. However, renting a car for short periods can be fairly economical. There are many car rental companies in Alberta-check the local phone directory. In order to drive in Alberta, you must have a valid international driver's, license issued from your home country before you arrive.
Other Transportation
Most Alberta cities and towns have full taxi services. They can be contacted via telephone, their numbers being listed in both the yellow (subject directory) pages and the white pages telephone directories.

Traveling
There are buses, trains and planes that travel throughout Alberta. For out-of town trips, contact travel agencies, airline companies or bus lines. For information about train travel, contact Via Rail. The telephone numbers for these companies are listed in the yellow pages. Bus travel is usually the most economical and the routes and times are usually quite convenient.
Alberta has two international airports, one in Calgary and one in the capital city of Edmonton. Many towns have their own regional airports.
