Living in Alberta - Weather

The province of Alberta has four distinct seasons:

  • Spring - officially March to May
  • Summer - officially June to August
  • Fall - officially September to November
  • Winter - officially December to February
Winter
Winter weather generally lasts about five months (November-March), with January and February being the coldest months. During this time, the temperature can occasionally drop to -35°C, but usually sits between -8°C and -15°C. If you dress properly in a warm jacket, with a hat, scarf, and gloves, winter can be quite enjoyable.

Even though winter can be cold, it is important to remember that all buildings and houses are centrally heated, public transportation is excellent, and warm winter clothing is reasonably priced and accessible. Besides that, the sun is usually shining in winter and the days are bright. Alberta is known for it's outdoor winter activities, including cross-country skiing, hiking, snow shoeing, and some of the best downhill skiing in the world in Jasper and Banff.

Alberta summers are especially warm and sunny, when the temperature ranges from 18°C to 25°C.

Alberta's climate tends to be quite dry. Although it does get average rainfall (between 30 and 60 cm a year, depending on the region), you can usually depend on lots of sunshine, no matter what the season. Southern Alberta gets on average 1,900 hours of sunshine annually, while Northern Alberta gets over 2,300 hours!
